For advanced representation we've had to make a web page about an object we like, design a buisness card and letter head that represents us and incorporate this them into a CV. We also have to make a website but I have no experience in this so I havnt started yet, but I want to have something that potential employees can look at to see an example of my work.
My buisness card is a sketch I did of a landcsape, very minimal in colour just white and green and sophisticated font. I feel this summarises my style of sketching with bold colours and writing but also demonstrates my design capabilities.

Rendering Practise
Its been a while since my last post but I havnt had a chance to stop and breathe, let alone post on my blog but here is whats happened in between.
With the interim crit coming up I decided to start experimenting with some rendering techniques that I could appy to the plan, sections and sketches. My normal style is a combination of bucket filling and photo collaging on top of hand drawn work, but from previous crits I knew that the bucket filling was quite flat and the collaging needed to represent actual types of planting at this scale and not just look nice.
So the idea to give a better texture and depth to my rendering was to continue with a pale bucket fill and then use coloured pencil over the top to show shadow. Jamie said yesterday not to use drop shadows in photoshop as they make the file to big but ive found it a quick and effective way to shadow. I will probably use both methods in my final render.
I also decided to draw myself a set of trees from both plan and elevation that i could quickly load into every drawing for consistency.

Julia doesnt like my people i've made in photoshop but i think they are more effective and stand out in a section better. She suggested to try them in grey but you might lose them in the sketch then?
Given how manic the last week has been the interim cit went really well, my actual design resoloution was good they said, most of the changes needed are minor like font size and annotation etc. The problem is im off to Uganda for 2 weeks at the end of March which leaves me a week to make all the changes, make a draft model and resolve my 1 to 50 area! Unlikely I think but we'll see how far I get.
Jamie was unconvinced by the circular gardens, I think it was the reason for the shapes that wasnt clear and he also said I needed to add 20% to those gardens which would help explain them more. Also the trees are to scattered so need to be denser, and the templates I drew are to generic and should represent individual trees. My planting is a bit unclear at the moment and its not my biggest strength but that needs resolving and I need to find a way to show my contempory hard landscaping in the drawings so that its clear my design is Contempory Gardenesque.

The Hanging
I was surprised at how well the crit went as everyone had said it was rough and to get ready for your work to be torn to shreds. But actually I got more feedback on the marked hanging than the crit. I had rendered and annotated my plan from scratch, but the greens were to close and the key still needed work. The hardest part for me is how you organise annotations and keys on a page so it doesnt look messy. Other than that the main points that came up were about getting more texture into my drawings by rendering over the top of photoshop fills, maybe with coloured pencils or wax crayons. I dont have time to go back and re do the work now as were developing our 1:200 areas, but i will take this advice forward into the development and work on my rendering style. I am looking forward to this next development of design although I need to work hard on my planting as its important to the design and NOT my strongest area!

1:500 after rendering and annotating from scratch. An improvement but not quite there yet. |

Masterplanning Crit
I was happy with how the masterplan crit went, got mostly positive feedback and some interesting ideas i didnt think of. My main problem was that my plan was to saturated which has been a problem in the past because the brightness on screen is very different to on plan. So i have had to render and annotate my plan which was a pain and took a solid day but im pleased with the end result.
Other than that and a few minor add ons to the sections and sketches everythings fine. Jamie mentioned about redrawing some of my sequentials in an autumn/winter scene which I havnt got time to do for monday (deadline!) but definetly will have a go when i get a spare minute! If ever...

Detail Design
On monday were moving on from master planning and onto the detail stage, if i can get the masterplan document done in just over a week. We have chosen our areas for a detailed plan at 1:200, mine is below. It will be nice to work at a scale were you can actually see whats going on!

Master Planning
Last term we started master planning, which I had not come across in garden design, so I had to learn a new way of thinking and designing. At first I didn't enjoy the process because it felt backwards and I wanted to get stuck into a design and was spending hours messing around with zoning diagrams and housing plans.
Looking back though, I can see how each layer of analysis has led to the point im at now, which is a series of drawings and the start of a document. The concept for my design is based on historical connections, specifically the old town in Tunbridge Wells (the Pantiles) and the new part (Victoria Shopping Centre). I thought it was interesting how there is almost a timeline in Tunbridge Wells, and in between the two parts is Calverley grounds. What I wanted was for my park to demonstrate the link in a historical sense between the old town and new, and to create a space that gives a sense of wonder and spirit of the town. So far my design is called the Missing Link, although im still not 100% on it.
For the last 3 years at college everyone has said you wont get a Christmas this year, and until now that wasnt true, and this holiday was not relaxing but i feel like im developing my style and learning quickly. I managed to get my masterplan and sequential sketches done before christmas which went well apart from deleting my 1:500 plan and having to pay £25 to get it back! Lesson for the future! The section drawings took less time and im more confident with them than my sketches which i struggle with. Hopefully everythings at a decent level but im ready to have the work torn apart in monday mornings crit!
