Last term we started master planning, which I had not come across in garden design, so I had to learn a new way of thinking and designing. At first I didn't enjoy the process because it felt backwards and I wanted to get stuck into a design and was spending hours messing around with zoning diagrams and housing plans.
Looking back though, I can see how each layer of analysis has led to the point im at now, which is a series of drawings and the start of a document. The concept for my design is based on historical connections, specifically the old town in Tunbridge Wells (the Pantiles) and the new part (Victoria Shopping Centre). I thought it was interesting how there is almost a timeline in Tunbridge Wells, and in between the two parts is Calverley grounds. What I wanted was for my park to demonstrate the link in a historical sense between the old town and new, and to create a space that gives a sense of wonder and spirit of the town. So far my design is called the Missing Link, although im still not 100% on it.
For the last 3 years at college everyone has said you wont get a Christmas this year, and until now that wasnt true, and this holiday was not relaxing but i feel like im developing my style and learning quickly. I managed to get my masterplan and sequential sketches done before christmas which went well apart from deleting my 1:500 plan and having to pay £25 to get it back! Lesson for the future! The section drawings took less time and im more confident with them than my sketches which i struggle with. Hopefully everythings at a decent level but im ready to have the work torn apart in monday mornings crit!
